Well, if it's a "potluck" with players randomly assigned to teams... how is it decided amongst each team which player will be the backup?

If it's done by skill, then a lot of players like me, who are "good" but not "great", won't know what role to expect. Would I be the benchwarmer on a strong team, or the second or even top player on a weaker team? The reason most people sign up, is, presumably, to get to play... so the chance of getting stuck as a permanent, last-resort backup just doesn't sit right with me.

In my opinion, the only way it would be fair to have each team have a designated "backup" would be if there were separate sign-ups for "main" players and "backups".

Still... it might be too much to expect all teams to do fair rotation of players, especially if one team has only its "best" two players but the other team has their "backup" available to rotate in. I suppose that the least skilled player on a team would be guilted into being the unofficial "backup" in many situations, but I'd rather not see that actually enshrined in the rules. Leave it up to the individual teams to decide whether they're about winning at all costs or letting everyone have fun.
