MENTAL ILLNESS

The causes of mental illness are multi-factored with both genetic and environmental elements. Due to social inefficiency some individuals appear to fall down the social scale and classically are over–represented among the homeless and other socially excluded groups. There is much research about causation but little is as definitive as in other fields of medical practice.

We still struggle to understand why some people suffer while others do not. Most research has been driven by observation of empirical improvements in patients after casual treatment which was administered for another reason.

Drug research is aimed at identifying treatments using similar molecules to achieve better results. Research has also demonstrated that for many patients institutional care has been negative and so today the tendency is to maintain patients in the community rather than hospital.

Patients with mental illnesses are well looked after with modern treatments and knowledgeable staff. There are currently problems in dealing with acute crises and, in particular, ensuring rapid assessment with possible hospital diversion. It is felt that many patients are admitted for conditions which could have been treated with enhanced community services.

Overall, there has been emphasis on developing community services and the trained staff resources have been drawn from in-patient services.

In the short–term this transfer of personnel has resulted in a mismatch between supply and demand. It is felt that better early intervention could maintain greater numbers within the community but to be successful community services would require more options.

OK, I'll bite...

First: WTF

Second: Is this cut a pasted from somewhere else on the net? You need to cite your sources or it's plagarism.

Third: Context (this is kind of why I made my first point)? I mean, I could see why you started this thread if you wanted to start analyzing some prominent UT personalities. I can think of a few juicy case studies from the folks I've played against over the years.

I kid, of course. I actually think we're all somewhere along a spectrum between "sane" and "mentally ill" depending on genetics and what's going on in our lives.

Anyone else care to speak out of turn?

Causes of Mental Illness

What are the causes of mental illness? Although the exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known, it is becoming clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
What Biological Factors Are Involved in Mental Illness?

Some mental illnesses have been linked to an abnormal balance of special chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other. If these chemicals are out of balance or are not working properly, messages may not make it through the brain correctly, leading to symptoms of mental illness. In addition, defects in or injury to certain areas of the brain have also been linked to some mental conditions.
Other biological factors that may be involved in the development of mental illness include.
(Genetics heredity): Many mental illnesses run in families, suggesting that people who have a family member with a mental illness are more likely to develop a mental illness. Susceptibility is passed on in families through genes. Experts believe many mental illnesses are linked to abnormalities in many genes -- not just one. That is why a person inherits a susceptibility to a mental illness and doesn't necessarily develop the illness. Mental illness itself occurs from the interaction of multiple genes and other factors --such as stress, abuse, or a traumatic event -- which can influence, or trigger, an illness in a person who has an inherited susceptibility to it.
(Infections): Certain infections have been linked to brain damage and the development of mental illness or the worsening of its symptoms. For example, a condition known as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder (PANDA) associated with the Streptoccocus bacteria has been linked to the development of obsessive compulsive disorder and other mental illnesses in children.
(Brain defects or injury): Defects in or injury to certain areas of the brain have also been linked to some mental illnesses.
(Prenatal damage): Some evidence suggests that a disruption of early fetal brain development or trauma that occurs at the time of birth... for example, loss of oxygen to the brain ... may be a factor in the development of certain conditions, such as autism
(Substance abuse): Long-term substance abuse, in particular, has been linked to anxiety, depression, and paranoia.

(Treatment of Mental Illness)

Extraordinary advances have been made in the treatment of mental illness. Understanding what causes some mental health disorders helps doctors tailor treatment to those disorders. As a result, many mental health disorders can now be treated nearly as successfully as physical disorders.
Most treatment methods for mental health disorders can be categorized as either somatic or psychotherapeutic. Somatic treatments include drug therapy and electroconvulsive therapy. Psychotherapeutic treatments include individual, group, or family and marital psychotherapy; behavior therapy techniques (such as relaxation training or exposure therapy); and hypnotherapy. Most studies suggest that for major mental health disorders, a treatment approach involving both drugs and psychotherapy is more effective than either treatment method used alone.

Oddly, I remember spouting all of that verbatim while standing in a urinal stall at a Chili's somewhere in the Midwest.

I thought I heard feet shuffling.

Although I distinctly remember saying "I have to pi$$ so bad I can taste it" before I said any of that. It appears that was removed from my statement.
